Black brown earth riot and golden, 2023

Flight, 2018, Paper, ink, acrylic, lace, fabric, stiffened canvas, 6 ft. tall x 5.5 ft wide

For many years, I revisited the viral image of “the blue bra woman,” an unnamed protestor from Tahrir Square who was viciously assaulted by the police in 2011. I was finally able to rework drawings of her figure enough to make this mixed media piece, caught between flying and falling.

Fire-laced

Fire-laced, 2018-2019

Fire-laced combines figures that turn into land masses with overlaid red lines, transferred from maps of oil pipelines in North Africa and the Middle East. The crouching figure on the left becomes tree-like. Under her feet is the word “shame” in Arabic repeated and layered, like roots of the tree. She transforms the shame of being a victim of wars and occupations through her mythical body.
