Fire-laced contains two related figures. The figure on the right is sourced from an Orientalist French photograph of an idealized odalisque, but here she hangs in space like a fiery invaded ghost.
The figure on the left morphs into a burning tree. Under her feet is the word “shame” in Arabic, repeated like roots or vines. Her shame, resulting from violations due to gender/ state violence/ colonial exploitations/ war, transforms through her.
